World Health Organization Multisite Collaborative Centre

Recognising the Institute's standing as a significant provider of programmes in education, training and research, and its networking throughout Australia, the World Health Organization appointed the Institute as a member of a Multisite WHO Collaborative Centre in Mental Health and Substance Abuse.

The Collaborative Centre represents a group of organisations which have been actively involved in WHO programmes of mental health and substance abuse for over a decade and have accumulated considerable experience in research, training and consulting work in the field of mental health. This experience extends throughout Australia, the Western Pacific region and globally.The Institute's programme encompasses the following:

  • Development of mental health education and training programmes for the Western Pacific Region Co-ordination of visits of WHO Fellows in Mental Health
  • Specialist training in psychiatry for countries that do not have infrastructure to train their own psychiatrists.

Psychiatrists in Training, Papua New Guinea

The Institute continues to provide, as part of its programme of facilitating the training in psychiatry of medical practitioners from Papua New Guinea, supervision and training of doctors from that country.

Fellowship Programme

The Institute continues to facilitate educational and training visits of mental health professionals from the Asia-Pacific Region to Australia. Recent fellows have undertaken programmes of education and training in Drug and Alcohol Medicine; Child, Adolescent and Family Psychiatry; Community Psychiatry; and the provision of Education and Training in Mental Health.

Workshop Programme in the Western Pacific Region

In collaboration with the WHO and governments in the region, the Institute will continue to facilitate the planning and development of training workshops in mental health.
