School-Link Training courses are developed using a detailed learning needs analysis , literature reviews and expert advisory groups. For School-Link Training Phase 4, 17 focus groups were held in metropolitan and regional locations with school and TAFE counsellors, adolescent mental health and related health workers, drug and alcohol workers in both government and non-government sectors, and Juvenile Justice counsellors and psychologists. A learning needs survey was distributed to potential participants across NSW. Nearly 500 completed surveys were returned and these have helped shape course content.
For School-Link Training Phase 3, in addition to focus groups with clinicians, consultations were held with community stakeholders. For example, in developing the Mental distress and wellbeing in Aboriginal young people module a wider reference group of 50 workers in health and education were consulted (approximately half of whom were Aboriginal) and focus groups were held with Aboriginal elders, grandparents, parents, carers and young people. This consultation process constituted one of the most comprehensive consultation processes ever undertaken in Aboriginal mental health and wellbeing in NSW.
