The General Practitioner (GP) Postgraduate Mental Health Program first began in 2005, after it was recognised that General Practitioners were providing primary mental health care to patients within the community. The General Practitioner (GP) Postgraduate Mental Health Program has been designed specifically for GPs who have a particular interest in the mental health of their patients. The course aims to provide General Practitioners with the opportunity to develop and advance their knowledge and skills in mental health care provision within their practice setting.
The generous funding from NSW Health Department has made the initiative possible and continues to support General Practitioners to obtain quality mental health education via the NSW Institute of Psychiatry. Scholarships may be available for General Practitioners and GP Registrars residing and working in NSW and ACT and who wish to enrol in the Masters program (Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or Masters).
The NSW Institute of Psychiatry is registered and accredited with the NSW Department of Education and Training. Degrees awarded by the Institute are equivalent in standard to a qualification of the same level in a similar field in other Australian higher education institutions, including universities.
Students who satisfactorily complete all of the components of the course will meet the training requirements for the Better Outcome Initiative in Mental Health Care (BOiMHC / GPMHSC), receive RACGP QA & CPD points and ACRRM points.
Practising General Practitioners and General Practice Registrars with a minimum of three clinical sessions per week or any interested medical practitioner with a clinical practice that includes mental health issues are eligible to apply.
The course is delivered by distance education mode. Students must have regular computer and internet access. Some units have telephone-based tutorials and workshops attached. Students are required to complete assignments and evaluations.
In addition to the General Practitioner (GP) Postgraduate Mental Health Program the Institute also offers General Practitioners workshops/ALMs, units of study and FPS training.
