About the Library

Welcome to the NSW Institute of Psychiatry Library's website. This site has been developed to help students and staff of the Institute in their work and studies. Currently, you will find guides to resources in the mental health subject area; links to the best of the web in the areas of psychiatry, psychology, consumers, research and statistics; a CIAP for mental health; the Institute online catalogue; links to free e-journals and e-books; and a referencing guide for students.

Library Services

Library support is primarily provided through the NSWIOP Library and the Mental Health Library, Cumberland Hospital. The NSWIOP librarian is on-site 2 days per week, usually Thursdays and Fridays.

The library is generally a closed reserve collection to be used when students are on-campus. In certain circumstances materials may be borrowed overnight or on short term loan by prior negotiation with the librarian or your course administrator.  Students  are encouraged to use the comfortable library space and to consult with the librarian when in block. The NSWIOP’s librarian can provide help and training via telephone, via email or in person, to assist students in finding information to support their coursework. Students should not hesitate to contact the librarian on (02) 9840 3833 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

The NSWIOP library web pages on the NSWIOP website have been designed to support your studies by listing catalogues, databases and websites relevant to studies in mental health.

NSWIOP students can purchase membership of the Mental Health Library (Cumberland Hospital) at the following cost:
3 month membership $27.50 inc. GST
6 month membership $55.00 in.GST
12 month membership $110 inc. GST

This membership allows students to borrow materials in person from the Mental Health Library, Cumberland Hospital.  Students can search its online catalogue at: http://library.wsahs.nsw.gov.au. The Mental Health Library is just a short walk from the NSWIOP and has one of the largest collections of mental health resources in Australia.

Since the NSWIOP inception in 1964, students have largely been drawn from the public health system where their studies support work practices. Historically, students have found their workplace hospital library to be the preferred and most convenient means of accessing additional materials. This is especially the case for distant students and it is anticipated that students will find the local hospital library in the first instant to be of great assistance. The local hospital library can organise to borrow books or journal articles via interlibrary loan from the Mental Health Library, Cumberland Hospital at no cost.

The physical library is small but growing and is managed by librarian, David Wong-See. Whilst physical resources at the Institute Library are at this stage limited, students of the Institute are encouraged to take advantage of the consultative information service offered by its librarian. If you need help finding information to support your studies here, please do not hesitate to get in touch.
